Technology Sessions

Activities at CYCD

Technology Sessions

Technology is an increasing part of our daily lives, CYCD recognises this and provides our young adults with the opportunity to develop their technology skills. Our technology sessions enable our young adults to develop confidence using technology in a range of areas.

Life Skills Sessions

At Post19 we support our young adults to become as independent as possible. Our life skills sessions are designed to develop important skills in a range of areas that are crucial to independent living.

Communication

In communication sessions, a programme known as ‘Makaton‘ is used as a non-verbal way of communicating. Makaton is designed so that someone who lacks verbal speech can use it to communicate with others more efficiently. Makaton features a series of symbols that acts as speech patterns, that are put into spoken word order. It’s an important tool because it benefits someone who struggles with speech difficulties and gives them a means by how they can get their point across.

The communication group also look at photos of different scenarios which involve emotions. The young adults tell the rest of the group how they think the people in them are feeling. Emotions are a central theme for communication sessions. We have made faces showing different emotions using paper plates. The group also use emotions dominos which is good for identifying different emotions.

The communication session also focus a lot on ‘ourselves’, our family, our likes, our dislikes and our pets among other areas. The group plays games to encourage turn taking and sharing. We also encourage talking to each other and respecting each other’s views and opinions.

Word-searches about what we have done today are used as well as activities involving finding missing words. The group also looks at phonics and prepositions.

Travel Training

During these sessions, the young adults work on their independence skills by using different modes of public transport to get around and explore a variety of towns around the country.

They are shadowed whilst going through the process of buying a ticket, finding the route and deciding where to catch the bus.

The group will be learning to travel independently on local buses. They will get help to locate the bus stops, working out bus times to and from different towns. The group will be working on improving their numeracy skills, timekeeping, road safety, community skills and planning.

Vocational Sessions

Post19 has a diverse pool of staff from an array of different backgrounds who bring their experience from all walks of life. We encourage our staff to share their knowledge and expertise with our young adults through a wide range of vocational sessions.

Book Club

We will explore folklore and fairy tales. We read celebration events. In some sessions we will read stories.

We all think of folklore creatures and made a big list.

Horticulture & Gardening

In the 2 hour sessions, we grow flowers and vegetables in this year-round activity.

We assist in preparation and grow most of our vegetables from seed. We hope to eat what we grow back at our base.

Horticulture is a social and therapeutic activity that promotes exercise, self-esteem and teamwork. We aim to provide purposeful and vocational activity to complement the other activities in the timetable.

Sensory Sessions

People on the autism spectrum can process everyday sensory information differently. Any of the sense may be over – or under-sensitive, or both, at different times. We offer specific sessions for those who have difficulties processing sensory information.
